Singapore’s National Climate Change Strategy
Singapore announced today (30th May 2006) the launch of public consultation on NATIONAL CLIMATE CHANGE STRATEGY.
Singapore is a city-state with limited natural resources. We are heavily dependent on imported fossil fuels and have limited scope to explore renewable energy sources to meet our domestic energy needs. As an export-oriented economy, much of the energy used by our industry is not used to make products for local consumption but rather products for export.
Nevertheless, the government has been committed towards addressing climate change in an environmentally sustainable manner that is compatible with economic growth. We have become a Party to the Kyoto Protocol in 2006. As a sign of our further commitment towards addressing climate change, the government has developed this National Climate Change Strategy (NCCS).
The NCCS represents Singapore ‘s comprehensive and holistic response to climate change. It documents our past and ongoing efforts on climate change and sets out future climate change plans in the areas of (i) vulnerability and adaptation; (ii) mitigation, (iii) competency-building and (iv) public awareness (see figure 1.1). This strategy will also be continuously reviewed and updated.
